for Ralph and Russo - London
Incredible is a word that fashion regularly devalues with systemic overuse.
But the story of Ralph & Russo really is pretty damned incredible. This is a label that made its first dress in 2010, entered the Paris couture schedule shortly afterward—despite being based in London and run by two Australians—and has since grown a client list of several thousand that puts it up there with any of the French capital’s grandest maisons.
Like the novels of Lee Child, the paintings of Jack Vettriano, or the action films of the sadly just-retired Liam Neeson, the Ralph & Russo phenomenon has blossomed and found a fanatical audience without the self-appointed cognoscenti heaping it with hype. This Collection is a debut ready-to-wear range that they plan to stock in their rapidly expanding retail network.
London should breathe a sigh of relief to have this label.
Around 200 of the 400-strong audience were clients, obviously affluent and visibly enthusiastic. When Arizona Muse emerged in a gown of silken strips bonded by crystal ball, phones raised en masse. They remained keenly erect during the 45 looks that followed, spanning metalized denim, zhoozhed trenches. ostrich feather–garlanded room-commanders, and a series of closing evening gowns that spared neither plissé nor crystal. Ralph & Russo represent a new iteration of luxury, made in London but cut for everyone who can afford it.
